The client approached us for a single house on a site they had purchased in North Dorset.

They wanted to replace the bungalow with a larger house. It quickly became clear that due to its prominent location in the open countryside on a hill that the planners were not willing to accept a taller building on the site.

Our planning directorMartha quickly realised that the way to achieve the larger building was to look at a different site. We noticed the barns on the site. One in particular was a1950s large steel structure. We developed designs for a house to replace this.Through landscape studies we were able to show that it would not be taller than the ridge of the barn and would be a great visual improvement.

The planning application was successful. The project worked because it was good combination of strategic planning thinking and architectural design.
