The post office building at 4-6 Creek Road features an ornate Victorian façade. To preserve this local landmark while breathing new life into the site, our design introduces a vibrant mixed-use scheme that mirrors the traditional development pattern of Deptford High Street.
The proposal retains the entire ground floor, introducing a commercial space that provides an active frontage. Above this, we have designed nine well-proportioned, two-bedroom apartments.
Our architectural approach for the residential extension is highly sensitive to the existing structure. The original roof and gables will be removed to accommodate the new upper floors, which are designed to feel like a lightweight contemporary penthouse nestling behind the dominant Victorian façade.
To avoid clashing with the historic ornamentation, the upper storeys are designed to be recessive. The material palette is being carefully considered to ensure the contemporary additions remain subtle. By utilizing finishes that interact with the surrounding light and environment, the extension acts as a calm, sculptural backdrop rather than competing with the existing architecture.
At the rear, the façade features a series of angled window openings. This orientation directs views towards the high street while preventing any overlooking of the neighbouring houses. Ultimately, the project reinvigorates a historic corner, seamlessly bridging Deptford's past and future through thoughtful, contextual design.
