The site resides within a conservation area surrounded by 17th and 18th century cottages, most of which are listed. With the importance of the sites setting, the proposed buildings needed to be sympathetic to the heritage of the area and of high quality design. ECA designed 2No family dwellings with large sided rear gardens and parking to the front of the properties. To minimise the massing of the proposals, the buildings were designed with traditional pitch roofs and single storey flat roof extensions to side and rear, marrying both traditional and contemporary architectural typologies. Contrast in materials is created with the traditional pitch roof buildings in brick and dark vertical wooden cladding for the single storey elements. Large floor to ceiling glazing to the ground provides a well lit and spacious open plan living area, traditional sash windows are proposed on the first floor.
